NRS 430 Summary of Current Course Content Knowledge

NRS 430 Summary of Current Course Content Knowledge

This course has a total of five topics that cover the essentials of a baccalaureate education, the scope of nursing and differentiation of ADN and BSN educations, nursing history, professional accountability, and advocacy and activism. I believe these topics are arranged in such a way that we maneuver through this course by understanding and reinforcing our foundation as nurses and the continuation of our duties throughout our careers.

I am familiar with most of these weekly objectives, we may not actually realize that we are living through these topics day-to-day in our professions, but they somehow integrate into our daily lives. Some of these topics which we use as skills and knowledge in our profession, I can personally benefit from by expanding my knowledge on and implementing them at my workplace. We never stop learning and adapting.

I do not know about the 2021 National Academy of Medicine Report on the nursing profession, but I am interested in reading on that topic, and I am curious if Covid-19 has anything to do with that or impacted this report in any way. And I am always interested in the nursing scope of practice and how it will differ from the Associate Degree of Nursing (ADN) scope of practice.

I am most excited to discuss topics four and five. Topic four interests me because of the topics on health equity and social needs, and professional accountability for personal self-care in nursing. Topic five I would love to talk about advocacy and activism. I am currently working on being more active at my workplace and I would love to take this knowledge with me.

NRS 430 Summary of Current Course Content Knowledge

The most intimidating part about this course (going back to school in general) is getting back into a school routine and finding that delicate balance again. Attending school as an ADN student was grueling but fun, so I’m hopeful that this experience will be fun!

Which weekly objectives do you have prior knowledge of and to what extent?

Which weekly objectives do you have no prior knowledge of?

What course-related topics would you like to discuss with your instructor and classmates?  What questions or concerns do you have about this course?

Which weekly objectives do you have prior knowledge of and to what extent?

I lived better part of my lifetime in Kenya Nairobi, also in Homabay where I did my Nursing Course in Kenya, then Machakos County for work purpose. I have travelled to many regions within Kenya and without, namely: Uganda, South Africa and now US. Currently I live in Kentucky, Lexington, USA.

I went to Islamia Primary School for my primary education and for my Secondary Education, I went to Eastleigh High School. For my tertiary education I attended Kenya Medical Training College where I graduated with a Diploma in Community Health Nursing.

I practiced as a nurse in a in Private hospital from 2015 to early 2016 then in a government Health facility from April 2016 to Nov 2022 before migrating to the US.

I am excited to further my education in a field that I genuinely love. My motivation is my family, especially my two kids. My family is my rock and always inspired me to continue pushing forward. They supported all my endeavors and honestly in their eyes, I could do no wrong. I am also inspired by the current society; it is one in which many people need the services and provisions of healthcare providers. During my graduate experience I hope to continue to learn new and more information. I also hope to gain more experience within my current line of work. I am excited to learn about different techniques that I will be able to utilize to further my career. After graduating I hope to continue practicing and work my way into administration within the Community Health Nursing field. Since GCU is christian based, I believe this degree will expand and improve my spiritual awareness.

The most challenging aspect of this classroom will be the fact that it is entirely online. This means that we will have to be very disciplined in our studies, and make sure that we are keeping up with the classwork. There will be no one to remind us to do our work, or to help us if we get stuck. We will have to be very organized and self-motivated in order to succeed. Another challenge will be the pace of the class.

NRS 430 Summary of Current Course Content Knowledge

Since we will be covering a lot of material, we will have to make sure that we are keeping up with the readings and the lectures. There will be a lot of information to process, and it will be important to synthesize it all in order to understand it. Lastly, we will have to be very careful in our discussions and debate. Since we will not be meeting in person, it will be easy to misread people’s tone and intent. We will have to be very respectful and considerate of each other in order to maintain a productive and positive learning environment.

What I like to do with Spare time: Meeting new friends and Socializing, listening to music and engaging in Sporting activities like Playing Soccer or exercising. I like to read motivational books like Benny Carson’s Think Big or Robert Pearl’s The Power of Positive Thinking. Not a great fun of movies but when I do is drama series.

Nice to meet all of you and I look forward to the class interactions!

Which weekly objectives do you have prior knowledge of and to what extent?

In the objective Discuss characteristics of successful students, I believe successful students are task focused and goal setters. Students who set goals of where they want to be in life and what they want to achieve are more likely to succeed. They tend to focus on getting their task done in a timely and efficient manner and are usually creatures of habits.

After reading the objective Evaluate the effect of plagiarism on the nursing profession plagiarism means intentionally or unintentionally taking credit for someone else’s work or ideas without properly citing the resource. When this is done it shows that the student is not giving credit and shows a form of dishonesty if the writer knowingly uses someone else’s ideas as their own. Plagiarism can result in automatic failure of class or explosion from school. It is very important to understand the importance of avoiding plagiarism by learning how to cite resources appropriately. We must understand that plagiarism has consequences and should be avoided.

2.    Which weekly objectives do you have no prior knowledge of?

The objective Propose strategies to support successful completion of a program of study is unfamiliar to me because after my two attempts I couldn’t complete my degree. Also, the objective Describe the impact of the 2021 National Academy of Medicine report on the nursing profession I have no knowledge of this information. However, I am interested learning about this subject matter.

3.    What course-related topics would you like to discuss with your instructor and classmates? What questions or concerns do you have about this course?

Under Topic 5 Advocacy and Activism I would like to discuss the importance of family centered care. Family centered care approach is major when caring for a patient. Family members are kept out of the loop to prevent HIPPA violation. It is important to know that patients can make decisions on whom they prefer to be involved in their plan of care. It is important for the multidisciplinary team to keep the patient informed of their care plans. However, it is also important to discuss with the appropriate family member who can advocate for their loved one. The stress of being hospitalized is major on both the family and patient. Family member may have to help the patient with children, finances etc. along with their own life. It is always important to speak with family members because things can become overwhelming, and they may need help as well.

In this course I’m really concerned about making sure my work is done in a timely fashion. I am concerned that I may need some brushing up on how to submit my work in APA format. I’m also concerned that I may not remember how to properly site resources. I would like to learn these things to complete this course successfully.

I have knowledge of Topic 1: Essentials of Baccalaureate Education and Topic 4: Professional Accountability, Standards of Practice and Professional Development. I only have a little knowledge of these because I was in the BSN Program in 2000. I would love to be refreshed though. Times are constantly evolving.

I have no prior knowledge of Topic 5: Advocacy and Activism. This topic sounds very interesting. I am a person who is always open to learning something new. Im eager to learn.

I would actually like to touch on the evolution of nursing and how far we have come. One thing about nursing is that everything is always changing and for that I get excited. Im just excited all around just to finally be completing what I started 23 years ago. I can already see that I will need to touch up on my APA format as well. Im always up for a challenge.

Reply to Summary of Current Course Objectives:

I have knowledge of this course’s objectives for Topic 1: “Essentials of Baccalaureate Education,” Topic 2: “Scope of Practice and Differentiated Practice Competencies”, Topic 3: “Nursing History, Theories, and Conceptual Models”, Topic 4: Professional Accountability, Standards of Practice, and Professional Development”, and Topic 5: Advocacy and Activism”. However, it is outdated as many changes have happened since I last actively practiced my nursing profession.

As related to online virtual classroom learning, I have no prior knowledge of Topic 1: Essentials of Baccalaureate Education”, question 1, “Characteristics of successful students”, and Question 2, “Strategies to support successful completion of a program of study”. This is my first experience with online learning and education.

Course-related topics I would like to discuss with my instructor and classmates follow Topic 1: “Essentials of Baccalaureate Education,” Question 1, “Characteristics of successful students,” and Question 2, “Strategies to support successful completion of a program of study” in regard to similarities and differences of online virtual classroom learning compared to face-to-face in classroom learning for successfully completing the courses in this RN-BSN program.

I have gone through the weekly Objectives and determined that most of the areas highlighted are in my dormain of knowledge to a greater extent. However,I need a refresher on the same.

An area I have scant knowledge on is T4 item on the impact of the 2021 National Academy of Medicine report on the Nursing Profession and Activism as a professional nurse in T5.

Course related topics I like to discuss with my instructor and Classmates is generally most of the areas highlighted as this will give opportunities to interract and share information from different perspectives and inturn build up on the existing knowledge base which will impact positively and translate to professionalism and desirable patient outcomes.
