DH Bench-marking and Discussion Assignment
Discussion: one page with APA reference 300 words
After reading the articles on benchmarking, searching for additional information on benchmarking and visiting at least two benchmarking focused web-sites, submit a paragraph that you feel summarizes the role of benchmarking in quality improvement. What did you find when you “Quality Checked” your local hospital or do you have examples of benchmarking processes in your health care facility? Feel free to share those things as well.
2 pages on Benchmarking My hospital is St Elizabeth Medical Center NY
This week I want you to learn about benchmarking. First, I want you to see a common use of benchmarking data. STOP right now and enter the name and city of a local hospital into an internet search engine OR click on this link for St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Boise Idaho. LOOK for information that says something to the effect of “Top . . . . . . Hospital” or “Award Winning” or some other message that says basically “OUR HOSPITAL IS THE BEST!” (Note: You may have to wait a little for the information to scroll around/pictures to change but I would bet that the hospital site you search has something to this effect.) Here’s a search to find an article for St. Luke’s: http://news.stlukesblogs.org/?s=top. How do they know this? One way might be from benchmarking. You may already know about benchmarking, if so hopefully you learn something new. If you don’t know what benchmarking is then this is the assignment for you!

1. What is benchmarking?? Read the documents posted in this module’s folder titled “Benchmarking”(7 pages but some double spacing) and “Benchmarking Case Study” (2 pages). Focus on knowing what benchmarking is, how benchmarking can be used to improve quality, and change/justify practice. Then, visit two or more of the web sites listed below. You are welcome to find your own website dealing with benchmarking and use it as one of the websites you visit. By exploring the websites I want you to see how healthcare facilities might use the outcome of benchmarking studies in “advertising” their facility. I also want you to see the number of “pay for service” companies that are cropping up to meet the benchmarking need.
• The American Association of Respiratory Care has a benchmarking service: https://www.respiratorybenchmarking.org/educationalResources.aspx
o Review the article which explains an Overview of The Respiratory Care Benchmark service
o Review the article which outlines the pitfalls of RC benchmarking
Several of the benchmark sites require you to log in as a member. In other words you pay for the luxury of locating the benchmark information or better yet, you pay them to analyze and compare your data against benchmarks. The author on benchmarking in healthcare makes it sound like hospitals are happy to share their successes but in fact the truth is that since true benchmarking requires comparison against some outside standard, several companies have been established to identify benchmarks and compare your facilities data for a cost. Most accreditation organizations like TJC (The Joint Commission) use benchmarks to determine if a hospital meets safety standards. Patients can use databases such as the one at www.jointcommission.org to determine where they want their heart surgery performed.
Here are some examples so you can see some of the benchmarking services that are available. These should be clickable links or you can cut and paste the address into your web browser.

2. For your next assignment, Visit the TJC web site: https://www.qualitycheck.org
3. “Quality check” your hospital, or use one of the Boise hospitals
• St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center
• St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center
4. When the data base finds your facility:
• Click on the View Report button to see the latest Quality Report
• View Accredited Programs, Certifications and Advanced Certifications
5. Click on the facility name to view the various reports on accreditation and certifications associated with your facility
6. Scroll down to see all Programs and Certifications associated with your facility
7. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to view National Patient Safety Goals and QI Goals
Can you see how consumers and health care providers could use this information to decide if you want to be a patient/work at a particular hospital?
8. Post a paragraph on the Group discussion board that you feel summarizes the role of benchmarking in quality improvement. The discussion board will be graded this week so make sure you post and then reply in meaningful ways to other student’s posts.
9. Read Chapter 9 in the textbook. Rather than giving you a quiz over this information or posting a question on the discussion board, I am just going to tell you that it is an exciting enough chapter that if you read the introductory patient scenario, YOU WILL WANT TO READ THE CHAPTER.
10. The Joint Commission (TJC) is the accrediting body for most hospitals and health care organizations in the United States. The link below includes information about some of the benchmarks (they use the term “Performance Measurement Indicators”) they use to rank and determine whether accreditation will be granted.
…and last but not least (go to the next page)
11. Click on a Core Measure Set that you find interesting and see what TJC is measuring:
