Community Resources: The American Red Cross
The American Red Cross (ARC) is a non-profit organization founded by Clara Barton in 1881 after being involved in International Red Cross after the war between France and Prussia. The first major activity was a response to the Thumb fire in Michigan’s thumb region. The American Red Cross responds to five main areas: natural disasters, blood collection, training on emergencies, processing and distribution of blood and international relief. Training includes first aid, swimming and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, basic and advanced life support, asthma inhaler training, emergency administration of oxygen and epinephrine auto-injector. In terms of blood donation, ARC supplies approximately 45% of blood needs in the US. Additionally, it has the largest blood processing facility in California (Jordan, 2020). Other than offering aid within America, the organization also assists in disasters globally and helps in preparation for future disasters, including vaccination of children in such situations.
Mission and Vision Statement
The mission statement is to prevent and reduce human suffering during emergencies by tapping donors’ generosity and volunteers’ power. The Vision of the organization is that courtesy of the robust network of donors, partners and volunteers, we aspire to turn compassion into action so that the victims of disaster are helped, communities are prepared for disasters, everyone can access safe blood, and blood products, armed services and their families are supported when need be. In an emergency, a trained individual is nearby to use the red cross skills. It also emphasizes commitment, compassion, creativity, credibility and collaboration. These values and business practices ensure effective public health safety.
The mission and Vision have contributed greatly to facilitating the organization’s public health and safety improvement. The mission has enabled the organization to quickly identify any group or individual suffering by mobilizing volunteers. Upon identification, the victims are offered the services stated in the vision statement. The Vision facilitates the provision of care to various individuals in need.

Globally, an initiative supporting ARC is the International Committee of Red Cross, which focuses on war victims (Canton, 2021). Locally, there are many Red Cross initiatives in every country. These local organizations have the same policies and legislations under the same principles as the American Red Cross.

The promotion of equal opportunity is guided by the principles of the organization, such as impartiality, universality, voluntary service, neutrality, humanity, independence and unity (Hoffman, 2020). In an attempt to ensure equality while improving the quality of life, there are many challenges, i.e. physical, cultural, economic or social barriers (Wylie et al., 2020). Economic barriers are encountered when there is a need for a lot of finances and human capital to handle a huge crisis. Physical barriers include the inability to locate the affected communities due to a lack of mapping. Violence, war and lack of community preparedness are other barriers that can be encountered.

The organization gets fund through a donation from universities, companies or individuals and utilize them in emergency response to alleviate suffering (Kafi, 2021). The adherence to the organization’s legislation and policies has enabled it to deliver diverse services to a large number of individuals, hence achieving its goal. Since the principles are part of the policies, the ARC can deliver focus on its Vision of protecting the exposed individuals and families. How does the Organization’s Work Impact the Health and Safety Needs of a Local Community
The American Red Cross has implemented various lifesaving strategies to improve the quality of life. First is the distribution of relief food to the people struck by disaster. It facilitates the prevention of malnutrition, especially among the most vulnerable groups in such cases. Malnutrition increases morbidity and mortality, impairs mental health and increases the spread of communicable diseases (Adeoya et al., 2022). Secondly, they facilitate access to safe blood, reducing mortality rates from accidents or life-threatening conditions. Additionally, safe blood will reduce the transmission of blood-borne pathogens. Lastly, the counselling services offered by the organization facilitates improved mental well-being and better-coping mechanisms among individuals affected by disasters or the armed forces and their families (Kola et al., 2021).
There are many ways in which nurses can be involved the delivery of service courtesy of the fact that all the activities carried out are related to health (Lewenson, 2018). They can be paid or work as volunteers. They can give health and safety training, facilitate blood drives, and work in blood processing centers. In cases of malnutrition, they can take anthropometric measures to know the level of malnutrition and will also be involved in calculating the required feeds. Some are leaders of the organizations. Lastly, they are involved in research concerning the areas tackled by the organization.
Conclusion
The American Red Cross operations are based on the mission, vision statement, principles, and values. It, therefore, attempts to deliver aid with equality even though they face several barriers. The policies, legislation and funding sources greatly impact the individuals since they are the organization’s basis. The vision statement illustrates that the organization has improved life in various ways. In delivering these services, nurses have a great role, whether from a volunteer or paid position.
