NRS-428 Topic 5 DQ 1:WHAT SPIRITUAL CONSIDERATIONS SURROUNDING A DISASTER CAN ARISE FOR INDIVIDUAL, COMMUNITIES, AND HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS?

Topic 5 DQ 1

What spiritual considerations surrounding a disaster can arise for individuals, communities, and health care providers? Explain your answer in the context of a natural or manmade disaster. How can a community health nurse assist in the spiritual care of the individual, community, self, and colleagues? NRS-428 Topic 5 DQ 1

For individuals, they may feel hopeless, for the community, there will be trust issues and for the healthcare providers, there will be a struggle when it comes to their competence. There will be a feeling of being hopeless for an individual in cases or a manmade or a natural disaster because these things would happen abruptly and most of the time, we are unprepared.

NRS-428 Topic 5 DQ 1

Human as we are we would always feel a sense of hopelessness especially if we lost everything that we worked so hard for or losing a family member whom we love so much (Falkner, 2018). For the community, a feeling of distrust may occur because there will be times during our most vulnerable phase that we would question why the community let it happen or what have they done to help us out.

Even the spiritual aspect of the community may be shaken because everything seems to be unsure at the moment and confusion or misunderstanding among members may happen. NRS-428 Topic 5 DQ 1

For health care providers there will be an inner struggle in the sense that they were the front lines during a disaster, the first witnesses to any devastation and the first to get traumatized at times (American Red Cross, 2020). Health care providers will also need some spiritual support from one another or the people around them not just to regain their motivation and strength but also to become spiritually healthy again in times of a disaster may it be manmade or of natural occurrence.

As a community health nurse, one will be able to help in identifying opportunities to effectively deal with the spiritual well being of an individual, community, self, and colleagues thus, promoting holistic care. During a disaster, one vital role of a community health nurse is becoming an effective spiritual support so that individualized care with compassion can be implemented (Makwana, 2019).NRS-428 Topic 5 DQ 1

All aspects of being a person is shaken and spirituality should always be given prime importance too because once it has been effectively addressed, healing and recovery from a disaster can be observed faster among the individual, community, colleagues and even in oneself.

The spiritual considerations surrounding a disaster that can arise for individuals, communities, and health care providers, include providing emotional support and care in accordance with the religious preferences of the people who have been affected by the disaster. Thus, it includes setting aside one’s own religious inclination and values. NRS-428 Topic 5 DQ 1

Being neutral and giving support and care based on the beliefs and values of the people who have suffered (Falkner, 2018). For example, in case of dead people, helping the relatives in performing the last rites based on the religion and culture to which the deceased and his or her family belong.

I can’t imagine how hard it can be to go through a natural disaster, seeing how hard you have worked to build a house/car and seeing nature take it away can be heartbreaking. As nurses, we have to be alert and be able to assess any situation, in the case of disaster the spiritual consideration we have to think about is a disaster can have a toll on someone’s mental health. Our eBook makes an important statement, “They should be aware of cultural differences and approach each patient with sensitivity and respect, allowing them to grieve, react, and respond the way that is appropriate for them, as long as they are not causing self-harm or harming others.

In areas where populations are extremely vulnerable, such as areas of high poverty” (Grand Canyon University, 2018), meaning letting our patients have the freedom to express what they feel spiritual can help heal the trauma, making sure this doesn’t harm someone else. Man-made disasters can be described as armed conflict and climate change. For example, armed conflict can bring division within the communities, loss of resources, and lives.

A way to help the community to cope with it is by relying on emergency rescue groups, that are capacitated with special training. “Emergency response workforce was established knowledge, more sophisticated, and more capable of reducing illness and saving more lives in less time” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, n.d.).

The responsibility of the PHN is to be aware of the community’s needs and put in place interventions that are going to be beneficial and better the outcomes of the community.  NRS-428 Topic 5 DQ 1

Natural or man-made disasters can be scary, chaotic and tragic. Nurses have always proved to be reliable responders when it comes to emergency situations. Their compassionate nature typically compels them to respond to those in need, even when their own safety is at risk. Many people mistakenly believe that spirituality and religion is the same thing, but they are not. Religion is a narrow definition of spirituality (Karadogan, 2022).

Spirituality is concerned with a person’s meaning of existence and how they interact with God or a higher force that transcends religion. A tragedy that shakes everyone’s spirituality affects the whole society because it may result in unexpected loss. People can feel helpless, despair, remorse, doubt God’s existential supremacy over their beliefs and faith, and become enraged by the situation.NRS-428 Topic 5 DQ 1

Spiritually balanced people can find meaning in their lives by associating with the supreme power. Consider a tragedy such as a flood, in which people lose their families, their possessions, and even their hope. This type of disaster necessitates a lengthy period of psychological, physical, and spiritual recovery.

Spiritual treatment helps people who are experiencing spiritual disasters find hope, courage, and purpose (Egan, 2019). Understanding a population needs and implementing a whole community approach to planning will help me in developing emergency operation plan that will provide equitable services and resources to all community members.

A community health nurse can assist in the spiritual care of the individual or community by listening to them as they speak their faith or praying with them. They can attend an event with the community or individual that promotes healing. NRS-428 Topic 5 DQ 1

Overall, creating a therapeutic environment is valuable in assisting the patient with the healing process and being supportive of them and their feelings will prove beneficial. In addition, assisting with a faith-based, non-profit organization that provides support during the disaster relief would help the community recover (Falkner, 2018).

NRS-428 Topic 5 DQ 1

Many of these faith-based organizations provide support and assistance following their religious principles that speak of compassion, caring, and helping the less fortunate (Falkner, 2018). Volunteering to join any of these organizations may fulfill the nurses desire to help the community and give the nurse a sense of pride.

The natural and human-made disasters both cause trauma to victims and the healthcare providers. Communities, individuals and healthcare providers have experienced trauma in their lives, lives of people and their families. Spirituality has been considered to promote and contribute resiliency which is the ability to bounce back a hardship (Falkner, 2018).

Spiritualty in a disaster is an essential aspect for the victims and even healthcare providers because it is viewed as a foundation for the healing from the aftermath of disastrous consequences. Spirituality gives meaning to precarious situations since it is felt to provide a sense of hope, power, and self-worth to the victims.

Spirituality is part and parcel of nursing and professional responsibility for every nurse. In providing healthcare, one of the essential elements a nurse should adhere to is the spiritual belief of the individual, community or the family of the patient as per the International Council of Nursing Code of Ethics (Thornton, 2019).

Ways in which a community health nurse assists in the spiritual care are turning in on the spirituality of the individuals by keeping a holistic understanding of the patient mind on matters of spirituality.

The nurse can do this by opening up and be willing to be sensitive to the individual’s matters which relates to spirituality. Nurses should also be prepared to uncover grave concerns of the individuals on issues which pertain to spirituality such as forgiveness and matters concerning heaven and hell (Rose, 2018). These can be achieved by creating time with these individuals and attending to their spiritual needs. Putting oneself in the individual’s situation and daring to go deeper in matters of spirituality may also assist.

The spiritual considerations that may surround a disaster may be that some cultures may respond with prayer, cry or they may have a stoic affect. Regardless of different religious affiliations a chaplain usually plays a large role in supporting the community and the emotional needs both during and after a devastating event (Falkner, 2018).

Chaplains may also provide counseling as well as comfort to individuals that may be shocked, grieving or emotionally devastated victims. An example of this would be a natural disaster such as a tornado. This hit my community not long ago. Many individuals lost their homes, businesses had so much damage they were unable to rebuild causing great devastation.

There was lots of support from the community in regards to cleaning up as well as rebuilding in the community and providing outlets and listening to those who needed it. Individuals were even posting things that had been found in their yards in hopes of finding the rightful owners. Community health nurses can help in spiritual care of individuals by providing support.

This may be by simply listening to them as they express their grief (Aten et al., 2019). Nurses should approach individuals with sensitivity and respect and allow them to grieve and respond how they need to as long as it does not cause harm to other individuals around them.

Nurses can also advocate for the individual’s spiritual needs and locate a chaplain if it is possible and facilitate the incorporation of spiritual practices that do not put the individual’s safety at risk or cause a halt in their course of treatment so that they may feel some comfort (Neria et al., 2018). However, community health nurses also need to remain aware of their own emotions and health and reach out for support when they need it as well.
