NUR 514 Leadership Style Reflective Essay Assignment
Leadership skills are considered important in management as it helps individuals achieve personal and professional success in an organization. Even though people tend to have different leadership skills, it is important to take into account leadership styles that befit a given set of an organization to improve the quality of management (Parush & Koivunen, 2014).
Often, inculcating effective leadership styles requires one to undertake self-reflection to learn about different approaches that will guide in making decisions. However, based on the trait theory of leadership, the ability to lead a team is a concept that one can acquire and develop throughout time. Guided by this argument, I will use self-assessment tools to assess my leadership strengths. I will avail results of the self-assessment tests and provide a brief explanation of areas for improvement to develop my future leadership styles.
Selected Self-Assessments and the Results
Emotional intelligence assessment is the first option to gauge my ability to lead. The self-awareness test is based on the analysis of emotions and how they influence our interactions with people. Emotions determine how a leader manages anger issues and also helps one to solve conflicts among subjects (Presbitero, 2017). Emotional intelligence also explores the ability of a person to communicate effectively with members of a team and therefore is considered one of the vital skills in leadership.

Meet my deadline

Based on the test undertaken, my emotional intelligence results are 120 and this reveals that I am flawless. In other words, I follow perfection in achieving the outcomes of a given task. I also strive to ensure that activities are done as per the plan and also try as much as possible to avoid mistakes in doing my work.
The second self-assessment test taken involves a personality assessment. This assessment focuses on the analysis of traits of an individual to ascertain whether a person is fit for leadership or can settle as a subject to be led by others. According to leadership theories, people can have inherent traits that give them a competitive edge of others (Nanjundeswaraswamy & Swamy, 2014). Personality traits like confidence can make one stand out to be a good leader especially in situations where tough decisions are to be made.
As per the test undertaken, my personality assessment tests indicate that I am an advocate. In essence, I tend to evaluate the circumstances before making a judgment. I also use intuition to direct mental energy in solving pertinent issues that arise in the current place of work. My identity reveals that I am confident when making decisions in the organization.
The third self-awareness test selected was a value assessment. The evaluation approach provides a brief description of the motivation of a person. The assessment is vital as it determines the behavior of a person based on what one considers as more important in life (Sutherland & Jelinek, 2015).
As per the tests on value assessment, my results indicate a high score for instrumental values. The premise means that I use logic, intellect, and self-control when making a judgment in the health facility. I am also ambitions, honest, courageous and forgiving when working with colleagues.
Leadership Style that aligns to Philosophy of Care
Flawless as a result of my emotional intelligence test closely aligns with my philosophy of care. The approach focuses on perfection and yielding positive results. Flawless trait encourages people to do good by following the clearly developed standards of procedure in an organization (Tuleja, 2014). With this, limited conflicts related to insubordination and neglect of duties are avoided. Besides, flawless trait strengthens the working of a given system as it requires people to work as per the stipulated protocols.
Incorporating Elements of Flawless Trait during Practice of Leadership
Even though human beings may not achieve 100% perfection, the flawless trait will enable me to motivate my team to achieve the best as per their abilities. Often, clinical practice requires utmost accuracy by using the available clinical guidelines to optimize quality care to patients (Sutherland & Jelinek, 2015). With the flawless trait, I will motivate my team to be accurate in using the recommended practice of care to avoid errors in clinical procedures related to negligence (Nanjundeswaraswamy & Swamy, 2014).
The style will also help me to organize shift hours among the health care team. Through this approach, shift hours will be equitably distributed to limit burnout due to unbalanced distribution of duties. I believe this will foster positive interactions among the healthcare staff and enhance cooperation among the team as they strive to provide quality services to patients (Parush & Koivunen, 2014).
Areas for Improvement
Through the self-assessment tests, I realize that I need to improve my personality. Particularly, I need to develop an identity of being assertive and confident, especially when making tough decisions that support the life of patients (Tuleja, 2014). Besides, I need to improve my tactics in dealing with colleagues at work.
I tend to use negative judgment towards health staff who are not perfect in their work and this often compromises the effectiveness of my leadership (Presbitero, 2017). I also have the challenge of using intuition to make a judgment in all situations within the health setting. I believe that some situations require observation rather than intuition to solve and therefore I purpose to be more observant when dealing with health staff.
Conclusion
The effectiveness of a leader depends on the personality traits that they possess. The assessment revealed the personality traits that I possess while also showing the areas that need improvements. The assessment conducted herein therefore allows me to know that kind of a leader that I am and what I can do to improve.

Topic 2 DQ 1
Description
Differentiate between “leading” and “managing.” Based on your experience in the health care industry, explain how an advanced registered nurse can lead well and provide management. Share at least one strategy you have used to effectively lead and manage staff within health care organizations Consider interactions with patients, team members, daily tasks, and responsibilities as you formulate your response.
Topic 2 DQ1
The diverse nature of individuals in the healthcare department who undertake various roles to ensure patients get the desired outcomes means that group leadership and management are key. The implication is that the healthcare setting has both leaders and managers who ensure that the organization’s mission, vision, and goals are accomplished and that the patient care outcomes are achieved (Bergstedt & Wei, 2020). Even though managing and leading are, in most cases, used interchangeably, the two have differences. It is important to note that the interchangeable use of the two terms emanates from the fact that the roles of leaders and managers in the healthcare setting often overlap. For example, both work to inspire nurses and other healthcare staff to achieve the set goal.
Leading and managing differ substantially. While managing entails controlling a group of individuals to obtain specific goals, leadership mainly involves inspiring the led people to achieve success as guided by the organization’s goals, mission, and vision (Kakemam et al.,2020). Therefore, it is evident that the difference comes in terms of the intended focus or the approach. Leadership focuses on influence, while managing focuses on controlling a group of individuals to achieve a specific or set goal. An advanced registered nurse should focus or aim toward combining the strengths of leadership and management for better practice and performance.
Advanced registered nurses should practice open communication and honesty to help them lead and manage well. Through such strategies, they will be able to fulfill their obligations and help the organization achieve its goals (Bergstedt & Wei, 2020). The strategies used in leadership and management can be applied in different situations. One strategy I have applied is open communication and taking a keen interest in the staff’s concerns. This helped in improving the staff’s focus, confidence, and commitment.

Topic 2 DQ 2
Description
Discuss potential causes of conflict occurring within health care organizations. What are some principles of negotiation and conflict resolution used by the nurse leader to address conflict? What model or leadership theory would be effective to use in addressing conflict?
System thinking considers the entire system not just the individual. Each organization has a mission and vision, and to be successful everyone within the organization should be focused on achieving the same vision. System thinking begins with self-awareness and clinical reasoning focusing on the goal of patient safety and the good of the organization (Statler & Mota, 2018). As a leader it is imperative to increase awareness of safety, evidence-based practice, and patient-centered care. Utilizing closed-loop communication, building a resolute team, and promoting an interdisciplinary patient-centered care is vital to be a successful leader (Statler & Mota, 2018). By increasing collaboration of the entire system, the leader will benefit positive patient outcomes and the organization’s mission and initiatives.
The idea of system thinking was built upon the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) four core competencies. These four competencies focus is on maintaining a climate of respect and values, utilizing the knowledge of the individual’s role to address the need of the patient, effectively communicating with everyone involved, and applying effective team dynamics and values to perform effectively for the overall good of patient and community (Interprofessional Education Collaborative, 2016). As a leader it is imperative that mutual respect and shared values are established to create a positive team environment. It takes the entire interdisciplinary team to provide safe care and create positive patient outcomes. Everyone must know their role, but when respect is present individuals of the team can bring personal insight that could positively affect the care and treatment of the patient or community. Open communication and mutual respect are imperative in the system thinking approach to healthcare. When the organizations vision and mission coincide with their employees’ goals and aspirations positive outcomes for the patients will occur.

Assessments Selected
For the assessment, I selected an emotional intelligence test, personality assessment, and learning style assessment. I selected an emotional intelligence test because I wanted to understand and effectively manage my emotions and of those around me. Sometimes, people feel offended when I interact with them; therefore, emotional intelligence tests would enable me to understand my areas of weaknesses and make appropriate adjustments in an attempt to increase social skills.
The test is critical in knowing the level of my interactive skills and the possible adjustments that can be made to enhance my leadership abilities. The test score for the emotional intelligence test was 70%. From the result, it was indicated that I am reasonably skilled in identifying, perceiving, and expressing emotions for myself and others (Nightingale et al., 2018). From the outcome, my skills in emotional intelligence aid in the processes of understanding others and how they feel. My level of emotional intelligence indicates the ability to understand my feelings and that of others.
From the personality assessment test, the score was 79%, indicating that I am an extrovert, a trait that determines how I relate with people socially. The test also indicated that I am observant and able to make decisions and cope with emotions. The test showed that my feeling for others was 81%. Finally, from the test, the outcome indicated that I have a strong sense of judgment with the score at 72%. For the learning style assessment, the scores were as follows: Aural 5, Visual 2, Reading/writing 3, and Kinesthetic 9. The results indicated that my learning ability relies on experiences, practical exercises, case studies, examples, things that are real, and trial and error.
Description

Welcome to Week 2
This week’s reading will examine characteristics of nurse leaders, analyze different theories and styles of leadership, and explore the nurse leaders’ role in influencing and developing organizational culture. As discussed in this week’s reading, nurse leaders must understand the challenges in health care, implement evidenced-based leadership into clinical practice, and transform health care through innovation.
There are several different approaches to leadership. Transformational leadership is the process in which leaders and followers motivate each other to attain and achieve levels of success. Servant leadership is the concept that leaders focus on the growth and well-being of people and the communities they serve.
The servant leader shares power and places the needs of others first while assisting people to develop and perform to the highest standards possible. Principles of successful leadership include a commitment to excellence, building a culture around service, mold future leaders, focus of employee satisfaction, encourage individual accountability, and recognize and reward success.
This week’s writing assignment focuses on self-awareness and self-assessment. Self‐awareness is essential for developing leadership skills. Recognizing your own strengths, weaknesses, and values, and understanding emotional intelligence and learning styles can help you to be a more effective nurse leader.
For this assignment, you have the opportunity to take a variety of self‐assessments to learn more about yourself and identify your assets and weaknesses as a leader. This will assist you in discovering how you can improve your own self‐leadership skills. You will be asked to think critically about your results and submit a reflection.
Becoming self-aware is an ongoing process requiring introspection. The more often people practice self-reflection, the more opportunities they have to understand their own behaviors and adapt their approaches to working with other people, which can improve both your own and other’s abilities to meet their professional goals.
Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:6 ESV
Re: Topic 2 DQ 2
What differentiates servant leadership from other styles of leadership is the primary focus on the follower first. Most styles of leadership direct their focus first on a mission and second on empowering followers to achieve that mission. Servant leadership directs its focus first on the ability of the individuals to succeed and then on the success of the mission.
Servant leaders help their followers to grow and succeed, which in turn aids in accomplishing the organizational mission. The perception of a servant leader should be one of a courageous steward who holds people accountable for their own good. Servant leaders are those individuals who develop and empower others to reach their highest potential. This speaks directly to the individual potential of the followers rather than the organization.
Servant leadership assumes that if the followers are maximizing their potential, it will directly translate to the potential of the organization and its overall performance. When servant leadership is applied correctly and with proper intentions, an authentic and natural form of reciprocity takes place between the leader and follower, which in turn increases workforce engagement and improves organizational performance (Gandolfi & Stone, 2018).
Servant leadership includes ten characteristics- listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to growth of people, and building community (Gandolfi & Stone, 2018). Communication begins with listening. A servant leader hears what others are saying through both verbal and nonverbal communication and reflect upon what they hear to lead a group to its full potential.
Having empathy or understanding and sharing the feelings of followers allow servant leaders to be placed in a position at the level of those followers. Servant leaders are further able to identify the characteristics hat make each individual unique and provide them with the ability to understand how best to support and lead their followers to achieve success in the mission, in this case how the staff nurses respond to their patients’ needs. While the leaders may not always accept the performance or actions of followers, the leader always accept each follower as an individual.
When the servant nurse leader displays a genuine interest in the team and further support through meeting the needs of the team, the quality of care increases within the organization (Thomas, 2018). Listening and empathy displayed by the servant nurse leader to their patients provides for interprofessional communication as the nurse will include the patient and family to identify the patient needs, make decisions regarding the patient’s care, solve problems together, and evaluate the planned treatment.
As a Nurse Manager, I employed servant leadership especially during the annual employee evaluation process. The employee evaluation process simply stated only evaluates if the individual is meeting the expectations of the organization. It lacks personal development features. I created a format that tasked each nurse to assess areas of strengths and opportunities.
Then together we discussed strategies to develop those areas. For example, a nurse with two years of experience felt she was not ‘experienced’ enough to consider growth in the department when viewed alongside nurses with more years of experience. A goal we set together was to attend a preceptor course to then begin first mentoring nursing students and later to precept new hire nurses to the department.
A servant leader is a skilled communicator, a compassionate collaborator, a system thinker, and someone who leads with moral authority. Nursing practice and the vocation of nursing lends itself to the servant leadership model through its dedication of service.
