Implementing hospital information systems requires the integral contribution of nurses for them to succeed. The process of implementation, termed as the systems development life cycle [SDLC], usually encompasses four levels of change: analysis, design, development, and implementation. If a healthcare organization does not involve nurses in each stage, they [nurses] are likely to lose interest in change implementation. According to Cherry and Jacob (2016), engaging nurses in system changes makes them develop a personal connection with such systems. They will be more committed to the system, which is crucial in motivating them to help patients and seek ways to improve care.

Many issues are likely to emerge if nurses are not involved in the SDLC process. Firstly, the loss of initial engagement is possible in the design phase. Engaging nurses implies that their attention will be grabbed in the initial stages of change implementation (Stanley, 2017). A possible issue in the design phase is the loss of trust in the change process. Involving nurses implies that they are conversant with the system’s design and feel like a part of it. The most likely issue in the development phase is the loss of connection, and the possibilities of competing priorities are possible in the implementation stage. Nurses’ core beliefs should be considered when making system changes (French-Bravo & Crow, 2015). Engaging nurses in the development and implementation of systems ensure that they are more committed to the new system. They will not have initial contact with the system too.

Reflect on your own healthcare organization and consider any steps your healthcare organization goes through when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system.

Consider what a nurse might contribute to decisions made at each stage of the SDLC when planning for new health information technology.

BY DAY 3 OF WEEK 9

Post a description of what you believe to be the consequences of a healthcare organization not involving nurses in each stage of the SDLC when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system. Provide specific examples of potential issues at each stage of the SDLC and explain how the inclusion of nurses may help address these issues. Then, explain whether you had any input in the selection and planning of new health information technology systems in your nursing practice or healthcare organization and explain potential impacts of being included or not in the decision-making process. Be specific and provide examples.
